AboutMe

Alexandra Samuels is a fourth-year journalism major at the University of Texas at Austin from Dallas.

Her interest in political journalism piqued after she began taking advanced English and history courses in high school. Her love and passion for reading, writing, and government courses made her decide to choose a career path where she could incorporate all three elements.

Summer of 2014, she worked as an intern for Star Local Media in Dallas where she wrote for 14 newspaper titles, a website, and its "discover guides." Fall of 2014, she started working as a freelance writer for USA TODAY. Based off her fall contributions, she was chosen to be a Collegiate Correspondent for USA Today College. She wrote and pitched weekly stories with a college angle and national appeal. Because of her works, USA Today College then asked Alexandra to be their first-ever Breaking News Correspondent. In addition to covering national higher education issues, Alexandra has been featured on USA Today's main website and print edition. Her works have also appeared in USA Today's Black History Month, College Magazine, and National Parks supplements. She is a former freelance opinion writer and editorial intern for the Daily Dot, where she wrote pieces focused on national politics. She currently works as the newsletters fellow for the Texas Tribune and will continue her fellowship with them through the spring where she will cover Texas' 85th legislative session. At the Tribune, she focuses on covering state House races, Texas' voter ID law, and the 2016 general election. She also contributes to their public education, water, and health-care newsletters.

Her works have been published on the Daily Dot, USA Today College, USA Today’s main website, USA Today’s 10BestStar Local Media’s online and print editions, the Texas Tribune, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and the Alcalde among others.

In college, she is a member of Texas Student Television (TSTV). TSTV is an organization aimed at recruiting students interested in broadcast journalism and/or radio, television, and film. On her specific award-winning show, KVR News, she served as the online and social media producer where she managed all social media accounts. She has experience both on and off camera. Alexandra also serves as the co-editor-in-chief of burnt x where she manages a team of 25 writers and videographers.

After graduating, Alexandra hopes to report on national political issues. She wants to share accurate portrayals of events going on, while keeping those with power in check. She aspires to share her knowledge of current events with the world and report on how political issues affect the country.
